90 Morgans for a 90th birthday celebration

26th October 2023

A poor weather forecast following heavy rain failed to dampen enthusiasm when it came to celebrating the 90th birthday of Dixon Smith, one of the MSCC’s Vice Presidents, at Bicester on 20 October.

An impressive array of dozens of Morgans representing every decade from the 1930s to the present day lined up on the track at Bicester Heritage at the start of a day-long event for which the MSCC was the guest of StarterMotor, the Bicester-based charity that works to engage a new generation to encourage them to take up careers in the historic vehicle industry and to enjoy historic cars.

The programme kicked off with Dixon driving his own 1955 DHC as he ‘inspected’ the ranks of Morgans. Members then gathered in a hangar to listen to Dave Withers, Chief Executive of StarterMotor, MSCC Vice Chair Jann Robinson, Chairman Martin Rickerd, and the ‘birthday boy’ himself, who was then presented with a certificate of outstanding service to the Club, a handmade piece of headgear made from Morgan parts by Jann Robinson, a card signed by Club members and several birthday cakes.

Members were then able to take part in a fascinating guided tour of the Bicester Heritage site to see some of the automotive-related businesses operating there, before many took to the track in their cars to enjoy some traffic-free driving.

The MSCC supports StarterMotor by fundraising through events, and all proceeds of the day from entry fees and sales of regalia went to the charity. An estimated £4,000 was raised through the birthday celebration.
