A new Code of Conduct

Treating each other with dignity and respect: A new Code of Conduct
By Martin Rickerd, Past Chair

We are all unique, and every individual has their own priorities, aspirations and commitments
in life. This inevitably means that we will meet people who have different views from our
own. Most would agree that we should seek to understand and respect others’ perspectives,
while being open and honest about our own, and resolve any differences amicably. This
applies within the MSCC just as in any other context.
Sadly, there have several instances when this has not been the case. Differences of opinion,
or differing interpretations of what is acceptable behaviour, have quickly escalated and led to
complaints about how one or two members have behaved towards others – or, indeed, to
people outside the club. This reflects badly on the MSCC as a whole, as well as on the
individual at fault, and should thus be a matter of concern for us all.
When people join the MSCC, they agree to abide by the rules of the Club. These change
over time, and it is now felt necessary to establish a procedure for handling complaints when

a member’s behaviour falls below expected standards. The new document sets out a step-
by-step guide to encourage the resolution of any disputes at the lowest appropriate level. But

it includes the ability, in the most serious cases, to lodge a formal complaint about a legal
safeguarding issue, which will be handled in accordance with the law.
The vast majority of MSCC members behave in a way that does not offend anybody, and
there is no intention to exaggerate the size of the problem. However, it is hoped that the new
Code of Conduct will provide a clear way of dealing with any issues of concern that do arise.
It is intended to help.
